WHAT WORKS

What makes a great horror book cover

Horror readers decide faster than almost any other genre buys. They scan for wrongness, the sense that something is off before they can explain it, and a cover that spells out the threat too plainly kills that feeling before the story gets the chance to build it.

Implication beats the monster

The strongest horror covers never show the threat directly. A figure at the edge of frame, a light on in a house that should be empty, something almost normal that isn’t quite. What the reader’s imagination fills in is scarier than anything rendered in full.

Darkness is the palette, contrast is the tool

Near-black backgrounds with one point of unnatural light, a lit window, one bright eye, a pale hand against night, do more work than a busy composition ever could. Horror covers earn their dread through restraint.

Typography that reads as threat, not decoration

Clean, polished type on a horror cover undersells the genre. Distressed serifs, cracked letterforms, and blood-red or bone-white type against black make the title feel like part of what’s wrong, not a label sitting on top of it.

Horror covers create dread and unease, often through the supernatural or existential. Thriller covers create tension and urgency, with a threat that’s human and immediate. If your book centers on detectives, crime, or investigation, our mystery/thriller page is the better fit.
