Amazon KDP is a starting point, not a ceiling. Every platform you skip is a shelf your book doesn’t exist on — and a reader who will never find it.
Amazon dominates self-publishing — but it doesn’t own every reader. Apple Books users don’t browse Kindle. Kobo readers in Canada and Europe rarely cross over to Amazon. Libraries run on OverDrive and Bibliotheca, not KDP. If your book only lives on Amazon, you’re invisible to a significant slice of the reading world. This guide covers every platform worth knowing, plus the cover specifications each one requires — so your cover is ready before you upload, not after.
Why Going Wide Matters More Than Ever
KDP Select’s exclusivity deal — 90 days of locking your ebook to Amazon in exchange for Kindle Unlimited enrollment — has been a useful tool for some authors. But it comes at a cost. Every day your book is exclusive to Amazon is a day it can’t be on Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, or in library catalogs via OverDrive. For most genres, especially romance, fantasy, and cozy mysteries, wide distribution consistently outperforms exclusivity over time.
The platforms below fall into two categories: retailers (you upload directly and they sell to their customers) and aggregators (you upload once and they push your book to dozens of stores simultaneously). Most authors use a combination — direct uploads to the biggest retailers, aggregator for everything else.
One thing every platform has in common: your cover needs to meet their technical specifications before you can publish. Understanding the right book cover sizes for every format before you start is the fastest way to avoid rejected uploads and last-minute redesigns.
Direct Retailers: Apple Books, Kobo, B&N Press
These platforms let you upload your book directly to their storefronts — no middleman, higher royalties, and full control over your listing. The tradeoff is managing each one separately.
Apple Books
Best for Apple Device Readers
70% royalties on every book regardless of price. Strong in the US, UK, and Australia. Requires a Mac or Apple distributor to upload. No price matching, no third-party ads, no exclusivity required.
Kobo Writing Life
Best for Canada & International
Kobo dominates in Canada and has strong reach across Europe, Japan, and ANZ. Offers a Kobo Plus subscription service (similar to KU) without forcing exclusivity. Fiction sells especially well.
Barnes & Noble Press
Best for US Print Presence
B&N is America’s largest physical bookstore chain. B&N Press offers both ebook and POD print publishing with higher royalties than KDP in some price ranges. Reach is mostly US-focused.
Genre examples from our portfolio — the kinds of covers that perform across these platforms:

Romance — strong on Kobo & Apple Books

Fantasy — loyal wide audience beyond Amazon

Thriller — strong B&N Press & library reach
Aggregators: IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, PublishDrive
Aggregators are the most efficient way to go wide. One upload reaches dozens of retailers, library systems, and subscription platforms simultaneously. They take a small cut of royalties in exchange, but for most authors the reach far outweighs the fee.
IngramSpark is the gold standard for print distribution. As the self-publishing arm of the world’s largest book wholesaler, IngramSpark gets your paperback and hardcover into bookstores, libraries, and academic institutions that won’t stock KDP-exclusive titles. If you want your book orderable by a local bookstore or available for library patrons, IngramSpark is non-negotiable. The platform also accepts both paperback and hardcover formats with full control over wholesale discounts and returnability.
Draft2Digital (which merged with Smashwords in 2022) is the easiest aggregator for ebook-first authors. One upload reaches Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Tolino, OverDrive, Scribd, and more. Their auto-formatting tool converts a Word doc into a clean EPUB automatically. D2D also offers universal book links and automated end-matter updates across your whole catalog — a huge time-saver for series authors. PublishDrive is the choice for authors with large backlists who want territory-specific pricing, advanced analytics, and distribution to 400+ stores including regional retailers across Europe and Asia.

Cover Spec Requirements by Platform
Every platform has its own cover file requirements. Uploading the wrong dimensions or resolution is one of the most common — and most avoidable — causes of rejected submissions. Here are the specs you need for each major platform:
⚠️ IngramSpark Requires PDF/X-1a — Not a Standard PDF
IngramSpark is the strictest platform on this list. They require PDF/X-1a format (a specific print-ready standard), CMYK color mode, embedded fonts, and exact bleed dimensions. A cover built for KDP will almost certainly be rejected without modification. If you’re publishing on IngramSpark, your cover needs to be built for IngramSpark from the start.
⚠️ If You’re Using an Aggregator, Target the Strictest Spec
When distributing through Draft2Digital or PublishDrive, your single cover file gets pushed to multiple stores with different minimum specs. Always design to the highest spec in the chain (Apple Books at 1400 × 1873 px is typically the benchmark). A cover that meets Apple’s requirements will meet everyone else’s.
How to Choose Your Platform Stack
Most successful wide authors use a stack of two to three platforms, not one. A common setup: KDP for Amazon (ebook + print), IngramSpark for bookstore and library print distribution, and Draft2Digital for all other ebook retailers. This covers the major bases without managing a dozen separate dashboards.
Your cover needs to be ready for all of them before you start uploading. That means your designer needs to know which platforms you’re targeting and deliver the right file formats: a high-resolution JPG for ebook platforms, a PDF/X-1a full-wrap for IngramSpark, and a standard print-ready PDF with bleed for KDP and B&N Press. Getting all of these from a single design session is standard practice — getting them wrong means resubmitting and losing launch momentum.
Platform choice also affects your cover dimensions if you’re publishing print. IngramSpark supports a wider range of trim sizes than KDP — including sizes KDP doesn’t offer at all, like 5″ × 8″ and some specialty formats. If your book’s ideal size isn’t available on KDP, IngramSpark is often the answer. Our ebook cover design service delivers platform-ready files for every major store — so you upload once and publish everywhere without the back-and-forth.
